At CALM DRIVING we would like to invite you to try the course before you commit. It seems to us its fair that you get a taste and this will allow you to decide if this is the career for you. CALM DRIVING have designed a unique taster session that will allow you to experience the feeling of teaching a real pupil through role play. This session will also allow you to experience what its like to train to be a driving instructor. You will experience two key subjects that are vital to driving instructing-
  • Commentary driving
  • How to teach a pupil
Lets start with commentary driving..............
To teach a pupil how to drive you must first be able to deliver your instructions too your pupil clearly and in good time so that your pupil can follow the directions and carry out the correct procedures. At first it is very easy to get tougue tied as an instructor due to the amount of information a pupil needs. This is where commentary driving really helps. If i am training a pupil and they are finding it hard to list all the things a pupil needs to do it is usually because they have not been prcticing 'Commentary driving'. Let me give you a good example of 'Commentary driving'. Lets say you sre teaching a pupil how to- MOVE off from the side of the road for the first time. lets assume the pupil has never driven before......

MOVE off from the side of the road
  • check hand brake is on by gently pulling up on handbrake it should feel tight
  • check gear stick is in the neutral position by pushing stick once to the left and once to the right
  • start the engine by turning key clockwise until you feel pressure and then let go of key
  • you will see that the rev counter now shows just under 1000 revs
  • put your right hand on the steering wheel at quarter past 12 on a clock face
  • put your left hand on the hand brake with your thumb positioned over the button
  • put the clutch fully to the floor with your left foot
  • palm the gear stick and push pressure to the left and push gear stick towards the dashboard , that is first gear
  • keep the clutch to the floor at this time
  • pivot your right foot from the brake pedal and rest it over the gas
  • the width of a pound coin--- press the gas until there is 2000 revs
  • try to keep the gas set
  • slowly raise clutch half way until you hear the engine note drop and freeze your clutch foot
  • now. do not move your clutch foot
  • look over your left shoulder out the back window for any cars bikes motorbikes and pedestrians
  • look out the left side window for the same thing
  • look into the left exterior mirror for any pedestrians nearby
  • check your interior mirror for any cars motorbikes or pedestrians
  • check the road ahead for the same thing
  • check your right exterior mirror for the same thing
  • check over your right shoulder for anything in your blindspot
  • if its clear signal for anyone that might benefit
  • keep clutch at bite and pull handbrake up slightly and push button in with your thumb
  • fully release handbrake and raise clutch up width of pound coin at a time until clutch is fully up
  • steer 5 minutes to the right until approx one metre from the kerb
  • check interior mirror to check distance of cars behind
This will give you an idea of how much detail a pupil needs when learning to drive. If you were out in your car driving yourself you could commentary drive YOURSELF throough the process like this-
  • "I am putting my clutch fully to the floor"
  • "selecting first gear by pushing pressure to the left and up towards the dashbord"
  • "i am going to pivot my foot to the gas pedal ans set 2000 revs"
  • " i am slowly raising clutch half way until i hear the engine not drop"
So you are talking yourself through the procedure step by step .

On your taster session i will show you how to commentary drive effectively.

Now on to teaching a pupil to Move way from the side of the road-
On this part of your taster session i will teach you how to conduct a driving lesson. I will show you how to transform your commentary driving skills and use them to get a pupil to move away from the side of the road- The first thing to know is that a pupil will normally do what you say , so for instance if you are trying to get a pupil to move away and you say
"Bring your clutch up" thats exactly what they will do....and stall!
So you must use the detail you learnt from your commenrart driving and use it when teaching a pupil.

After lots of help from me i will go into ROLE PLAY and pretend to be a pupil you must then try to get me to move away.

This 2 hour session is highly recommemded and its a must for anyone that would like to become a driving instructor .
